He can’t stand or walk for too long
WHEN the clock strikes 10 at night, it’s qiqong therapy time for Sam
Wang.
Two years of working non-stop and neglecting his health have finally
taken its toll on him.
When he was promoting his album in the Philippines last month, he was
suddenly unable to move or walk.
On returning to Taipei Sam, 28, went for a hospital heck-up and found
that soft bone in his spine was pressing against one of his nerves.
That’s why he suffered constant backaches and numbness in his legs.
A co-worker recommended him to a Chinese qiqong therapist, whom he
“reports” to every day.
His condition has improved, he said. “Now the pain is more bearable,
but I can’t stand or walk for too long.”
Some morning, he also goes for acupuncture. When he is free, he goes
to a sauna with fellow 5566 member Jason Hsu to relax his muscles.
“My condition is quite similar to Rio’s (another 5566 member whose
back injury is so serious he’s been forced to take a breather), so
all the more I should take care of myself.”
So he has cut down on stunts, and is taking time off to recuperate.
Same also recently launched a book, 100 Ways to Enter Showbiz. IT
chronicles how he kicked, danced, catwalked and sang his way to
stardom.
Once a national soccer player in school, he joined a street dance
group and emerged champion in a nation-wide competition. A friend
than recommended that he model “because I had the height and I could
dance”.
He became a recognized face in fashion magazines. Then three years
ago, he was roped into 5566.
“No-one can defeat us now because we rose from adverse circumstances.
"The more people say we can’t do it, the more we wanted to prove them
wrong. But we hurt ourselves in the process, so now we have to take
good care of our health,” he said

TONY Sun, drives a BMW sports car, but he’s aiming for much more.
His goal: To buy his own house, own two cars have a stable career,
and have millions in the bank.
“Only then can I safely provide for my other half and my kids,” he
told TNP.
But love ranks low for this bachelor whom reports link with Taiwanese
actress Ding Xiao-qin.
His weightage is 30 per cent for love and 70 per cent for his wrok,
he said.
His top priority now is to buy his dream house.
And what would this be for the young star?
A four-storey bungalow with a courtyard for his dop and a rooftop
dance studio.
“To own a property is always good, and it won’t be too long,” he said.
He reckons he can do so by the end of the year, when he can
comfortably fork out NT25 million ($1,25m) for it).
“Any more than that would be too expensive!” he said.
Despite, his red-hot status, Tony, 26, comes across as humble and
thrifty.
Unlike other celebrities who collect fancy wheels, he hopes only to
get a new family car, maybe an MPV, in addition to his second-hand
BMW Z3 convertible.
He will never be caught splurging on meals either.
“I’m not stingy with food, but to spend NT$10,000 on a meal is
ridiculous!” he said.
For him , a treat is a good steak or sashimi.
“I’d love to patronize roadside stall too, but there’d be too many
people staring, and if they ask for autographs, I’d find it hard to
refuse.”
But public scrutiny is hardly a big price to pay for fame.
“I don[‘t have freedom anymore. “I can’t pick my nose of scratch in
public, nor can I eat sloppily,” he said.
“But that’s only expected. We have to sow before we reap, and we
already have the fame and fortune that we want.”
Getting to meet other celebrities is also a perk that omes with the
job.
The J-pop fanatic perked up when asked about J-popster BoZ, whom he
met at the MTV Asia Awards lat month.
Whipping out his phone to show a photo he took with her, he recalled
how they had chatted briefly at the post-awards party.
He had presented her with a trophy on stage.
“She’s very cute, petite, and friendly,” he said.
Asked if they exchanged phone number, he chuckled and turned a little
pink.
“I’d feel embarrassed…It’d be so weird. Maybe I’ll ask when we meet
the second time round.”
Does BoA fit his idea of a dream girl? He chuckled again, and said”
“It’s was just an opportunity to make new friends.”

YOU know it when Zax Wang is in a good mood. He is more effervescent
than Tigger on Prozac, and you literally have to grab him to sit him
down fo an interview.
Luckily, when TNP spoke to Zax on Sunday morning, the sun was shining
on his personal calendar. For there have been days, Zax confesses,
when he wakes up with an absolute chip on his shoulder and is
snappier than a mouse trap.
Yes, the crazy host of Show biz does have a darker side. The 24-year-
old admits to having a darker side. The 24-year-old admits to having
the “stinkiest” temper of all the 5566 boys, and being prone to mood
swings.
But showing that grumpy side of him in public is something he has to
be mindful of, especially now that he’s such a celebrity.
People are so used to seeing him cheery that when he doesn’t smile,
people come up to him asking why.
“They just don’t like to see you angry.”
While his wild antics sometimes make him seem hard-up for attention,
Zax claims he is hardly so. He insists: “I became a celebrity because
I want to perform, not because of the attention.”
Zax added that the biggest sacrifice he has made for a showbiz career
is “freedom”.
He missed being able to go shopping without being stopped by fans
everyday two seconds and being chatted up by star-struck sales
assistants.
He also used to be hurt by nasty Internet postings, and would confide
in his Showbiz co-host cum best friend, Zhang Shanwei.
But he has sine goy used to all the attention, including the media
spotlight on his relationship with Taiwanese starlet Chi Chin, who is
four years old than him.
While he’s open about the fact that he’s dating her, Zax prefers to
call her his “good friend” rather than girlfriend.
If I say that she’s my girlfriend, it’s like I have to marry her. But
I can’t get married yet, I still have my career to sort out before I
can afford to settle down, he said.
“And I have to considers her feelings if we ever decide to part.”
Zax says that Chi Chin has no problems with this arrangement, and
that he had fallen for her “kindness and cheerfulness”.
But Zax plans to get hitched before 28.
“My parents had me when they were only 21 or 22, so my dad is like a
brother tome. He always tells me, “Where are you going? Take your dad
along, don’t think I’m too old to have fun!”
“I want to be able to say that to my own children.”

Why release three versions of the same CD?
Every new version comes with different freebies, like calendar and
bonus VCDs of our music videos and behind-the-scene footage of our TV
commercials. We could have sold the VCDs separately, but that would
be pian qian (Mandarin for cheating money).
Is 5566’s third CD cover a copy of J-pop group Smap’s earlier CD
single?
I saw the cover two days before release and thought it looked like
Smap’s.
I wasn’t too bothered, but the Taiwanese papers kicked up a huge fuss.
Thy twisted my words and went with the headline, “Tony says no big
deal, if you dare.” I got slammed on the Internet, with people
calling me Taiwan’s shame.
From February to May 5566 will come monthly for various promotions.
Isn’t that too often?
Sounds like a lot… Will fans get tired of us? Maybe, we should cut
down? But if our boss tells us to come again, we’d still have to.

Read or not, it’s always showtime
IT was a smile to rival Korean star Bae Yong Jun’s.
After hearing that TNP had labeled Young Jun Mr Perfect for his
smile, Zax Wang decided he wanted to be perfect too.
So throughout the photo shoot with us last Sunday, the jester would
flash his pearlies demurely whenever we looked his way.
The shoot with him and his band members Tony Sun, Sam Wang and Jason
Hsu at their suite at the Marina Mandarin Hotel started early at 10am.
Early, because the usually boisterous 5566 was uncharacteristically
subdued and even seemed a bit grouchy.
Except for Zax, who was the only bright-eyed one in the bunch, the
rest of them looked like they wanted to crawl back to bed.
Jason was staring blankly at the TV set and our entrance didn’t rouse
him to even stir from his chair.
A blearly-eyed Sam was getting his hair tamed by a stylist from Reds
Salon, while a sulky Tong darted into the sanctuary of his bedroom
the moment we arrived.
None of them said a word as they went into the rooms to change.
We heard the 5566 boys had a nasty experience one at a fashion shoot
where the clothes were ill-fitting, and there was concern that the
boys or their manager would throw a tantrum if it happened again.
But luckily for us, they boys were very accommodating.
Sam, for one, decided to bear with the discomfort, a pair of snug
jeans even though it was too tight for him to sit down.
Food, it seems, was the great equalizer.
Once the boys had their breakfast, the mood was significantly lighter.
Their manager had been telling us what the boys had for supper the
night before, and at the mention of food, the boys were distracted
from the camera and started discussing what they wanted to eat that
night.
Apparently, they had feasted on 100 sticks of satay, barbecued
stingray, friend rice and noodles the night before.
Someone mentioned seafood, and it sparked a hours for their favourite
black pepper crab.
In between the interviews the boys entertained themselves.
Sam almost disappeared into the sofa, which matched the colour of his
jacket.
As his manager recorded everything on a handheld camera, Sam turned
his back, hid his head and tried to blend in with the couch.
Zax and Tony tickled the ivories on the grand piano, while Jason
spent an inordinate amount of time examining the toilet fittings, for
some unknown reason.
No doubt, the prospect of a sumptuous supper later, proved to be the
best motivation for getting out of bed.
